Adolphe Audusson is an old (1910) French variety that can be found in many gardens and is widely appreciated for its reliability and hardiness. However, there is some variation in the plants that bear this name, as over the years they have been propagated from different sources and possibly confused with other similar varieties. The plant that we have has round, bright red, semi-double flowers with 12 petals around the yellow stamens, often with a few small petaloids intermingled with the stamens. The leaves are dark green and glossy, and the growth is vigorous and initially somewhat open, eventually forming a compact bush.
