One of the very few camellias with variegated foliage, Reigyoku is noted for the golden feathering down the centre of the leaves which contrats dramatically with the dark green background. In the spring, the leaf variegation is initially pinkish in colour, before turning yellow. The flowers, which are produced in March/April, are nothing out of the ordinary - small and single, with light red petals and a cluster of golden stamens - it is the foliage that is the real point of interest. The growth rate is quite slow and fairly open, eventually forming a rounded shrub. As the name suggests, 'Reigyoku' originated in Japan, originally being released in 1956.
