'Black Magic' has medium-sized, dark red flowers which vary from semi-double to a rose-form double showing just a few stamens. The foliage is unusual, being highly serrated like holly leaves, and similar to that of Camellia japonica 'Holly Bright'. The leaves also have a tendency to hang downwards on the stems. The growth is vigorous and upright, and fairly open rather than dense and bushy. Flowers through the spring, starting from as early from as early as January. 'Black Magic' is one of the red Camellia varieties noted for the darkness of the flowers, which can be almost black in appearance. However, we find that when grown in the UK, the flower colour is not as intense as it appears to be in warmer climates. It is nevertheless, an unusual and attractive variety.
