Magnolias were one of the first flowering plants to evolve and now comprise more than 100 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees that are found in the wild across Asia and North America. In general they are less fussy about soil conditions than Camellias, and can be grown in any good, well-drained, moisture retentive soil that is neutral to slightly acid. For many of the deciduous Magnolias, the flowers appear early in the spring before the leaves, and can be susceptible to frost and wind damage, so a sheltered position is ideal.
